Does Cosmetic Acupuncture Hurt?

Short answer is NO! Majority of patients do not feel anything, however it is not unusual to feel a tiny and very quick prick as the needle is first inserted into your skin. This will disappear in a split second and the rest of the treatment is virtually painless and discomfort-free. Many patients actually comment on how relaxing it is.

The needles used on the face are as little as 0.12 of a millimetre - that’s finer than half of your hair strand.

At 909 clinic, we uses the best needles in the world. These Japanese-made specialised facial needles have an innovated tip (among many other special features) that push skin molecules apart instead of cutting through them, for a smooth and completely painless insertion.

Are there any side effects or downtime involved with Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is gentle and safe.

There is no downtime associated with facial acupuncture, which means you can have treatments without having to worry how it may affect your day. We do however recommend being gentle with your body and rest after each session as the effect of acupuncture does still continue to work even after the needles have been taken out.

The most likely effects post-treatment include flushing of the face. This is very normal and related to the increased circulation of blood to the face. Occasionally minor and temporary bruising may occur at the site of needle insertion. This is usually painless and resolves itself after a couple of days.

What type of needles do you use?

At the clinic, we use a very advanced needle that is designed to be used specially for the face.

The facial needles are Japanese needles that are coated in a special silicone for painless and smooth insertion. They also have a innovated tip that pushes skin molecules apart without cutting or breaking the skin.

Different needles have been trialed before ordering these top of the range needles, but we find that these needles are in a league of its own for quality and comfort for our patients!

Are there contradictions for Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic Acupuncture should be used with precaution if:

  • you are pregnant

  • you have a migraine/severe headaches

During your consultation, our practitioner will make an assessment of your suitability for Facial Acupuncture.

Can I have Cosmetic Acupuncture if I have had Botox?

Facial Acupuncture can still be performed in areas that have Botox by avoiding the muscle layer and working on a more superficial skin layer. Cosmetic acupuncture can still target other areas of the face that are free from Botox for eg: Some of our patients have Botox around their eyes, and still have Cosmetic Acupuncture in the forehead and around the mouth.

Can I claim my treatments on my private health insurance?

Most major health funds cover acupuncture treatments. However, the level of cover can vary depending on your health fund. Please contact your health fund directly to find out.

HICAPS services are available to allow rebates to be claimed immediately from most private health insurance agencies.

Can I claim my treatment on medicare?

No, unfortunately acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are not covered by medicare.

How long are the treatments?

Please allow about 90 minutes for the initial consultation. Follow up sessions typically take 45 minutes to 1 hour.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies from person to person and depends on the severity of the condition. While you should notice an improvement relatively soon, often people may require repeated treatments for the full benefit to be felt. Generally we recommend 4-5 treatments, after which we will reassess your condition and then advise on ongoing treatment requirements.

What should I expect at my first visit?

At the initial consult your practitioner will ask you a number of questions about your current health and health history, including questions about your diet, lifestyle, mental health and any medications or supplements you may be taking. They will also feel your pulse and look at your tongue to allow them to form a complete Chinese medicine diagnosis and personalise your treatment. The treatment may include acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, as well as other techniques such as cupping or gua sha.

It is best to wear loose fitting clothing, however depending on the acupuncture points used some clothing may need to be removed. Towels and blankets are provided for modesty and warmth. If at any stage you feel uncomfortable please let us know and we will adjust the treatment accordingly
